FullSizeRender 55Autumn in Maine is perhaps the best time of year to start working towards your weight-related goals. Here’s why:

  • Kids are back in school and life regains structure.

You know how important breakfast and family meals are for your children and it turns out it also helps you with your weight-related goals. Planning is easier when you have a fixed schedule. Everything seems to be more casual in the summer, but when you flip the calendar to September, things get structured. That structure gets you back into a regular routine and routines are the foundation of every successful weight management plan.

  • It’s harvest season in Maine

Eating more fruit and vegetables and less processed food is an effective weight loss strategy. The benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables are many. The fiber in produce helps regulate blood sugar levels which is an effective way to avoid craving highly processed carbs. You can get the freshest, best-tasting produce of the year at farm stands, farmers markets and in the supermarkets. An even better way to get your produce is to pick your own. It’s a fun way to get physical activity and your fruit, vegetables, herbs and even flowers.

  • The Maine weather is perfect for outdoor fun

Physical activity is important to successful weight loss and when the weather is right and the scenery is beautiful it makes what could be a chore a joy. Take advantage or the cooler, dryer weather, the lack of biting insects, and the fall foliage to take lots of long walks and bike rides. It’s fun to run around playing with kids in this weather. Rake a pile of leaves and let the kids jump in them. Let the kids help rake the pile. It’s never too soon to get kids helping with the family chores. Horseback riding in the fall is glorious. If you have always wanted to learn to ride now is the time to sign up for lessons.

  • Get off a few pounds before the holiday season

Besides the routine and structure that naturally returns in the autumn, there’s no major eating holidays looming until Thanksgiving. That gives you time to start lowering your weight before you must face the biggest weight challenges of the year. When you go into the holiday season feeling slimmer and successful it exponentially increases your chances of coming out of the season still feeling slimmer and successful.
