Today is a good day to take a look at how to lose weight with a liquid diet. The idea of a liquid diet appeals to a lot of people because it is so simple and uncomplicated. Just drink a couple of shakes a day with all the necessary nutrients to lose weight!
Liquid diets are widely recognized as a fast and easy solution to lose weight.
A liquid diet means you will be replacing all whole, solid food with juice, smoothies, soups, frozen bars or a combination of any or all of these products. By cutting out all solid foods you effectively reduce your calories. In fact, many, if not most, liquid diets contain 600 to 1,000 calories per day. That is a significant calorie deficit for your body’s energy needs which is basically a starvation diet.
What could be wrong with that?
A lot could be wrong. Here are the problems with a liquid diet.
- For starters, it’s a very low calorie (VLCD) diet
This means the calories you’re eating are much too few to fuel your body’s needs. It also reduces the nutrients your body gets from the food you’re eating which results in nutritional deficiencies. To avoid hurting your health a VLCD it should be closely monitored by a doctor. It’s advised that patients on VLCD see their doctor every 2 weeks to avoid serious side effects. The side effects can include headaches, bad breath, constipation or diarrhea, fatigue, bad breath, gallstones, muscle loss and nausea.
Liquid calories don’t satisfy in the same way that solid foods can. The research shows that liquid calories are not recognized the way that calories coming from solid foods are. Eating a meal of solid foods that requires chewing before swallowing will leave you feeling full longer that swallowing a drink with the same calories.
- Doesn’t address skills needed to maintain loss
A liquid diet doesn’t help you to learn how to eat in a balanced manner that supports lasting weight management. It’s a quick fix and it usually is as temporary as it is quick. Weight is regained rapidly when the liquid dieter goes back to normal eating. The rate of weight gain is hastened by the loss of muscle resulting from the VLCD. Muscle requires calories to maintain itself. When the muscle mass is reduced the body now burns fewer calories at rest (metabolism).
Once again, the easy way to lose weight isn’t the best way or even a good way. If you’re looking for the equivalent of the “weight loss pot o’ gold” you won’t find it in a glass!
