Wow! I’ve been in the weight loss business for 24 years! That’s a long time and a lot of people I’ve helped. In that time I learned a lot about the weight loss business and business in general.
People may pay to lose weight but too many don’t understand that weight loss isn’t a commodity. You cannot buy a lower weight.
Some people want to lose weight. Some people would go so far as to say they’re desperate to lose weight. Oddly some of the people who claim to be desperate to lose weight do not appear to be overweight to anybody but themselves. Whether one is truly overweight or not, nobody can “buy weight loss.”
There are promises that weight loss can be bought by buying this program, or a cookbook, or a series of cookbooks, or some pills or potions or lotions, but no matter how convincing and how many testimonials are made, weight loss is a result of specific actions of the individual.
Not even obesity surgery guarantees weight loss unless the patient is willing to take action following the surgery. People who don’t understand this go from one guaranteed weight loss solution to the next and each time the the outcome is as disappointing as the last.
People have different goals.
Early in my career in this business I thought everybody joined Weight Watchers wanting what I wanted when I joined. I wanted to get to a goal that was somewhere in the middle of my weight goal range. I wanted to find the balance between how much I can eat, how active I needed to be, and reaching and maintaining that weight.
It took a while for me to realize that my goal wasn’t the same goal for everybody. People have personal goals, some of which had less to do with the number on the scale. The number on the scale may be secondary or not matter at all.
I learned that my goal only mattered for me and in this job my goal was only to help members reach their goal – whatever that may be. Many times, my job included helping members identify their weight-related goals. I learned that identifying weight-related goals was especially important not just for those who didn’t know what their goals were, but also for those whose goals kept changing over time.
BMI isn’t the best way to determine a weight goal.
Body Mass Index is a good starting place because there does seem to be a window 20-25 where there are the fewest health complications due to weight for both male and female adults (18 years and older). BMI is the metric relationship between height and weight. There are many things that aren’t taken into account in the formula such as body build. Therefore, while a BMI of 20-25 may be appropriate for adults, it isn’t appropriate for each individual adult.
I’ve been told, “I thought you cared about people, but this seems like it’s all about the money.” While somebody is saying that to me as though I’m a vile and despicable person for wanting payment for my service I can’t help but think, “don’t you expect to get paid for doing your job?”
I work hard to make sure every meeting in Maine is staffed by caring, knowledgeable, motivational service providers. All of whom are themselves, Lifetime Members, who have personal insight and understanding of the struggles of successful weight loss.
I ensure that all service providers are 100% committed to the success of their members and I also understand that once a member leaves a meeting we can no longer be responsible for the choices that member makes which can either support or undermine progress.
My job is to make sure that everybody who pays my company to help them lose weight gets the best service possible to help them learn and follow Weight Watchers scientifically sound program. It’s a job to which I’m completely dedicated and am always working to improve our services to the people in Maine who choose us as their weight management solution.
My priority is to give the greatest value possible for the money!
