Should I Have Weight Loss Surgery?

I’ll start this blog about candidates for weight loss surgery by addressing some myths.
  1. It’s not cheating.
  2. It’s not without its own serious risks, including death.
  3. It’s not considered a cure all by itself.
  4. It’s not cosmetic surgery.
  5. It’s not the quick and easy way to get skinny.
  6. Not everybody who seeks bariatric surgery will be advised to have a procedure.

Now that we have those 6 common myths out of the way, bariatric or weight reduction surgery can be a life saver and a life changer, but the surgeon can’t perform miracles. The patient must take an active role in the successful outcome of the surgery.

How do you know if you are a candidate?
  1. More than 100 pounds overweight
  2. Less than 100 pounds overweight but suffering from a condition created or exacerbated by obesity such as sleep apnea or type 2 diabetes.
  3. Efforts to lose weight with diet and exercise have been unsuccessful.
  4. An adult over age 18.

In addition to these physical characteristics, you must also demonstrate an ability to make permanent lifestyle changes.

If you fit these qualifications there will still be a screening process. Your candidacy will be evaluated by a team of qualified bariatrics specialists. Alternatives will be discussed as well as a full and detailed explanation of what to expect from surgery.

If you feel that you might be a candidate you will need to find a qualified bariatric surgeon.

Be willing to travel a little if necessary to get the right bariatric surgeon. Proximity is a consideration but experience and successful operations trump convenience!

If you feel like you hit a wall with your efforts to reach and maintain a healthy weight, it might be time to consider medical intervention.

If you feel like you hit a wall with your efforts to reach and maintain a healthy weight, it might be time to consider medical intervention.

Some patients who have undergone weight loss surgery are ashamed and/or embarrassed because they “lost weight by cheating.”

Weight loss surgery is not cheating. You might encounter judgmental and moralistic morons whose stupid comments could make you feel bad about your choice. Don’t let them get to you; their opinions only reveal their ignorance. Be assured that you are taking your health seriously and making a decision that could help you to live a long and healthier life.
